Enemy variety was gated on wave STRENGTH, and strength counts the wave number as well as the fleet - so a player who had grown nothing still met lancers, and then snipers, simply by surviving. The
min_strengthvalues were meant to keep the openings honest and could not, because the term they gate on rises on its own.Change
Variety is gated on the fleet itself. Lancers need 4 vessels, snipers 5, artillery 6, against a starting fleet of 3 - so the opening waves are the default enemy only, at any wave number, and each vessel past the starting three opens exactly one new kind. Wave SIZE still scales as it did, so a player who never grows still meets escalation rather than the same two chasers forever.
Verification
test_wave_system.gdchecks waves 1, 5, 20 and 60 against fleets of 1-3 and asserts nothing but chasers appears, then that variety climbs with the fleet and reaches at least three kinds.
